There are several factors that can cause hydraulic system failure. Our experts at R & N Hydraulics, Inc., will help you identify some of the more common culprits.

Don’t rush to break out the hydraulic repair tools before you know what is really happening. You may end up spending a lot of time on tasks not even related to the failure.

Reasons for System Failure, How to Identify

1 Abnormal noise usually is a sign of trouble with some particular component. However, it’s only a good indicator when you know how and when to check that component. Without this analysis, you could end up with a shiny new part that makes the same disturbing noise — and you still don’t know what the problem is. Most experts recommend using three essential system analyses to correctly identify the trouble: pressure gauges, flow meter, and a way to create a false system load.

2 Heated components or high fluid temperature is another problem indicator. Fluid temperatures above 180 degrees Fahrenheit can cause damage to seals and other components and degrade fluid more quickly. Check the reservoir fluid level, and make sure there are no obstructions to airflow around the reservoir like dirt or debris. You should also inspect the system for possible causes of aeration and cavitation (the formation of vapor cavities within fluid).

3 A reduction in the system’s performance is a no-brainer and often is the first indication that something is wrong. Usually this is seen in longer cycle times or slow operation. Since flow determines actuator speed and response, a loss of speed indicates a loss of flow. Hydraulic circuits may experience external leakage, such as an obvious burst host, or internal leakage, which can be trickier to find. An infrared thermometer, or in some cases a hydraulic flow tester, will help.
